Shadows lengthen, day grows short,
dusk comes slowly along
with night falling in behind
on quiet footsteps that leave no mark
on the still green grass
that is growing colder by the minute
Stretch out your arms and feel the climate change
as the first cold breaths of the season
come in stammered, chattering gasps
like when you step into a too cold shower
Feel the power of the elements
to quicken your step, to change your direction
to raise your eyebrow as you ask the question,
"is today the true beginning of winter?"
